Step 1: Decide Your Company Type

First, choose the type of company you want to register. The most common options are:

  • Sdn Bhd (Private Limited Company)
  • Berhad (Public Limited Company)

Most startups and SMEs choose Sdn Bhd due to simpler compliance requirements.

Step 2: Choose a Company Name

Select a unique company name and check its availability through the (SSM).

The name must:

  • Not be identical to existing companies
  • Avoid restricted or sensitive words
  • Follow SSM naming guidelines

Step 3: Appoint Directors and Shareholders

To register a Sdn Bhd :

  • At least 1 director (must be a Malaysian resident)
  • At least 1 shareholder (can be the same person)
  • Directors must be 18 years old and above

To register a Berhad:

  • At least 2 directors (minimum, must be Malaysian residents)
  • At least 1 shareholder (no maximum limit)
  • Directors must be 18 years old and above
  • Directors must not be disqualified under the Companies Act 2016

Step 6: Register via SSM Portal
